Every Child Belongs in the Classroom — No Exceptions

Imagine a bright five-year-old girl, full of curiosity and eager to explore the world around her. Just like every other child her age, she deserves a seat in a regular classroom—sitting beside her friends, singing rhymes, playing during recess, learning new things, and growing up as an active part of her community.

She lives with an intellectual disability and cerebral palsy. These are simply parts of her journey; they should never become reasons to keep her away from mainstream education.

What she needs is not a separate space, but the right support, a little patience, and people who believe in her potential.

Inclusive Education Is a Right

Inclusive education is not a favour we extend to children with disabilities. It is their right.

When a child with a disability learns alongside her peers, everyone benefits. She gets the opportunity to learn, participate, build friendships, and develop confidence. At the same time, her classmates learn valuable lessons about empathy, patience, acceptance, and what true friendship means.

Teachers, too, become more understanding and compassionate, while schools gradually become more welcoming spaces for every child.

One Child Can Begin a Change

In Davangere, Karnataka, Ms. Sharadha N from the Community Resource Centre (CRC) has been working closely with the child and her family. By guiding the family, supporting the school, and helping create the right conditions for inclusion, she is helping ensure that this child is not left behind simply because the existing system was not yet designed with her needs in mind.

Her work reminds us that inclusion does not always begin with a major transformation. Sometimes, it begins with one person choosing to make space for one child.
